November 4th 2008, Barack Obama elected president of the United states of America.
The day the world changed forever.
Most americans will view it as one of the most important days of their lives but do us Irish really care? Considering the recent downturn of the economy and the worry felt by the majority of people in Ireland about financial issues such as mortgage payments and oil prices you would think the answer would be yes, as even though politically barac has nothing to do with us he is now the most powerful figures in the world, and whatever he does in his role over the next four years is bound to have a substantial effect on us paddys one way or another. lets just hope he's good for all of our sakes

It is interesting to note the amount of interest shown by Irish people towards this symbolic presidential election. I think it is very important to Irish people as actions carried out by previous presidents have directly affected this nation! e.g Mr Bush' war in the middle east has substantially increased the cost of oil
The reason I think evryone loves Obama so much is because of his abilty to talk. Having listened to most of sppeches I have found them to be somewhat inspirational, but in what way? I like most people get caught up in the 'YES WE CAN' and 'VOTE FOR CHANGE' chants but what can he really change?
You're right in that the economy is so bad at the moment it seems like only time will be able to tell if he's going to be able to change things at all. One things for sure though, the expectaions are extremely high.
